From The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance
Chatham-Kent is experiencing an increase in measles exposures. Given this rise in cases, Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) is urging residents to take necessary precautions and seek guidance if they suspect exposure to the virus.
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads through respiratory droplets. Symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a distinctive red rash. Complications can be severe, especially for young children, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.
If you suspect that you or your child has been exposed to measles AND ARE AT RISK, please follow these important steps:
- Ensure your vaccinations are up to date. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is the best protection against the virus.
- Contact your primary healthcare provider or call CK Public Health at 519.352.7270 ext. 5902 for guidance on next steps.
- If you intend to come to the ED, please call the CKHA Emergency Department (ED) (519.352.6400) if you suspect you may be at risk. Measles is highly contagious, and unannounced visits can put others at risk.
- If you are directed by ED staff to enter the hospital, please wear a well fitted mask. Masks are available at CKHA ED entrance or ask security for a mask upon entry.
If you have an appointment at the hospital and believe that you have been exposed to measles and are unvaccinated, please call before you come to your appointment. Please call 519.352.6400.
CKHA and local public health officials are actively monitoring the situation and working to prevent further transmission. Public cooperation is essential in managing the spread of measles and protecting our community.
